  • This site is a guide for international dentists who want  to practice dentistry in the United States of America

How do I  practice dentistry in the USA?
  • In order to practice dentistry in the United States, you will need:
    1. A DMD or DDS degree from an accredited institution
    2. Successful completion of the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) Parts I and II
    3. Successful completion of a licensure examination- CDCA, WREB, or ADEX
*Following completion of these 3 requisites, one can apply to any individual state dental board to obtain licensure in a state in the US

DMD/DDS Degree
  • The DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine) are equivalent degrees and hold the exact same value.
  • Normally, a DMD or DDS course is 4 years for American students, however,  many American dental schools offer Advanced Standing Programs which allow internationally-trained dentists to obtain a DMD or DDS in 2-3 years.

Admission Process
  • The admission process for an Advanced Standing DMD/DDS Program can be divided into the following phases :
    • Phase I: Applications
    • Phase II: Interviews
  • There are Alternatives to Advanced Standing DMD/DDS for those who want to practice in the US without obtaining a DMD or DDS, however, there are limitations on where and what one can practice if this route is selected.
