Licensure Examinations

Five examination agencies for dentists and dental hygienists exist in the United States. The other examination agencies are, Council of Interstate Testing Agencies, Central Regional Dental Testing Service, Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, Southern Regional Testing Agency, Western Regional Examining Board (WREB). These were organized to better standardize clinical exams for licensure.

The 3 major licensing examinations are:

1. CDCA/ADEX
  • The Commission on Dental Competency Assessments administered clinical examinations are accepted in 46 different US states/jurisdictions and Jamaica. The CDCA develops, administers, scores, and reports the results of its examinations in Dentistry and Dental Hygiene.
  • The ADEX Dental Examination is administered by CDCA in the CIF format for senior dental students and in the Traditional format for all other candidates.
2. WREB
  • The Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) is one of five examination agencies for dentists and dental hygienists in the United States.
