Bench Test Preparation

What is a bench test?
  • Along with the interview, some schools conduct a bench test/examination
  • A bench test is a practical exam performed on a typodont to assess your hand skills.
  • It is typically conducted in conjunction with or following the interview

What can I expect on the bench test?
  • They vary highly depending on where you are interviewing, however you can generally find out what the bench exam will comprise of by speaking to college faculty, current students, or checking out studentdoc or Facebook.
  • Typically, the test will be a few operative preps (i.e. Class II, Class I) on a typodont
  • FPD Preps (i.e. PFM #8, Full gold #30, etc.) on a typodont
  • Don't take this lightly-- the standard in America is VERY high

How do I practice for the bench test?
  • I recommend getting a typodont, compressor, air rotor, and burs to practice at home
  • Make sure you get either the Kilgore or Columbia Typodont depending on which school's exam you will be taking
  • Many students also buy loupes (as you will be using them in dental school anyway) for their exams. These are helpful for some students but not mandatory
  • Bench prep classes can be very useful, however, they can also be VERY expensive. I paid a DDS graduate for individual lessons at home and it proved to be much more cost effective for me--consider looking into this option!

Example preps coming soon!.. keep checking in!
